In the last three years, 56 consumers have filed complaints against H&R Accounts, Inc. with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and 42 with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Complaints allege the debt collector committed multiple FDCPA violations by engaging in unfair collection practices such as:

- Communicating with third parties about a debt
- Failing to provide debt verification to consumers
- Reporting false information to the credit reporting agencies

Many of the complaints allege that the company is attempting to collect on debts that were paid in full or should have been paid by a health insurance company, but were never billed to the insurance. Federal bankruptcy law prohibits collection attempts on accounts that have been discharged in bankruptcy proceedings. Many of the remaining collection practices described in the complaints are violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), a federal law enacted to help protect consumers from abusive, deceptive, and harassing practices by debt collectors. Some of the collection tactics specifically prohibited by the Act include:
- Telling consumers they will be arrested if they do not pay a bill
- Impersonating a law enforcement officer or government agent
- Adding fees or expenses not authorized by the original contract
- Failing to inform consumers calls are a debt collection agency, attempting to collect a debt and that any information obtained will be used for that purpose
- Calling consumers are unusual times or places
- Failing to inform consumers that a call or letter is an attempt to collect a debt and any information obtained may be used in order to collect on that debt
